The 1950s was a golden age for design and this is particularly true of the automotive industry. One of the finest examples of this fact in action is this stunning 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster which is going under the hammer with RM Sotheby’s. This is a particularly unique lot and it is the final 300 SL fully restored by Rudi & Company and the quality on offer really is second to none so it’s not hard to see why there is a lot of interest in this majestic-looking Mercedes.
Keeping its original chassis, engine, gearbox, and body, there is a real air of authenticity to this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster which really sets it apart from the crowd and it has an asking price of $1.9m so it’s one for the serious car collectors only. It has been finished in Silver Grey Metallic over a Red leather interior that gives it an infinitely classy aesthetic that we’re loving here at Coolector HQ.
Whilst this 300 SL Roadster was made to US specifications, it is believed that the car was delivered new to Germany rather than being shipped straight to North America and it has had a remarkably storied history since first being acquired by an American military lieutenant stationed in Germany in the 50s.
The vehicle’s restoration was entrusted to Rudi Koniczek of Rudi & Company in Victoria, BC – a world-renowned 300 SL specialist – and the car was stripped to bare metal and found to be in surprisingly good condition. It received all-new rubber, European-specification headlights, new taillight lenses, and all-new glass, while the original trim was re-chromed to a show standard.
Refinished in its original colours, this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster was test-driven for 300 miles before being subject to an additional service to make sure it ran and drove as new. Last but not least, the car is accompanied by a Becker Mexico radio, tool roll, tire iron and jack, a set of soft-top head guards, and a set of fitted luggage trimmed in 1079 red leather by Taris Charysyn & Co.
