Ford has been responsible for some of the most iconic vehicles out there over the past century and the 1960s was a particularly fruitful era for the brand because it saw the emergence of mesmerising machines like this 1966 Ford GT40 MkI Road Car. Going under the hammer with Mecum Auctions, this stunning steed is 1 of 30 original road cars produced and this lot is an outstanding original example with just 13,442 original miles on the clock.
Not to put too fine a point on it but this 1966 Ford GT40 MKI Road Car is one of the best original road cars in existence and, as you might expect, there is a lot of excitement surrounding this lot which is being entered into Mecum’s Florida auction in 2024. It has never been in an accident or damaged and it has been in the same previous ownership for nearly 30 years meaning it is largely unseen by the public.
Previously owned by Umberto Maglioli, A Porsche And Ferrari Works driver and three-time winner of the Targa Florio and 12 hours of Sebring, there is an awful lot of pedigree to this 60s Ford and it’s safe to say it won’t be coming cheap when the hammer drops on this one. On November 14, 1966, this lot was delivered to Italy to its original owner Antonio Allecce after completion at the Ford Advanced Vehicles factory in Slough, Buckinghamshire, England. It was delivered new in this breathtaking shade of Metallic Dark Blue and it is powered by the impressive and High Performance 289 CI V-8 engine with Weber carburettors and the standard ZF 5-speed transaxle.
The GT40 Mk1 is a rare and beautiful car that is often considered to be the most desirable variant of the GT40. It is a road-going version of the Le Mans-winning GT40, and it is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. This particular example is well-documented by noted marque expert Ronnie Spain, and it comes with a comprehensive history dossier. This car is a surefire way to get invited to any concours d’elegance or private tour, and it would be a welcome addition to any collection of postwar racing cars. It is the pinnacle of sports car design and achievement, and it would be the crown jewel of any collection.
