It’s not every day you see a convertible Ford Bronco but, here we are, and we love it here at Coolector HQ. This spectacular 1968 Ford Bronco U13 Roadster is going under the hammer with Mecum and if you’re in the market for the ultimate in old school cool set of wheels this Fall, we might just have unearthed the ideal candidate for you. This is 1 of just 212 factory Bronco U13 Roadsters built for the 1968 model year and, without question, one of the coolest.
The 1968 Ford Bronco U13 Roadster from Mecum Auctions is also 1 of 26 1968 Bronco U13 Roadsters known to exist and it has been exceptionally well restored under the supervision of Andrew Norton of Baja Broncos Unlimited, a well known Bill Stroppe/Baja Bronco authentication and restoration expert so it is presented in a remarkable condition that will turn heads everywhere the new lucky owner takes it.
Ford introduced the first-generation Bronco in 1966 in three body styles: the open-top doorless U13 Roadster, the short-roof U14 Sports Utility pickup, and the long-roof U15 Wagon. The short-lived Roadster was discontinued in 1969, and the Wagon was the only Bronco available in 1973. This restored Roadster was originally built on January 13, 1968, for the DSO 74 Seattle Ordering District. It was first sold new at Boyer Ford in Oak Harbor, Washington, and is one of only 26 examples known to exist.
This Roadster is painted Code A Raven Black, replacing the original Code J Rangoon Red. Dual side mirrors add a unique touch, while Parchment bucket seats with Rosette inserts and rubber floor covering provide comfort for two passengers. The optional 289 CI V-8 engine is factory-detailed to the level of a Michigan Truck Assembly plant, and the chassis is similarly well-finished. A 3-speed manual transmission and 2-speed transfer channel power the Dana 30 front and 3.50:1 rear limited-slip axles for 4×4 capability.
The optional U132 Heavy Duty package increases the GVW rating of the Mono Beam front and leaf spring rear suspension. This Roadster won the Bill Stroppe Award at the 2016 Fabulous Fords Forever Car Show, and it rolls in award-winning style on original Ford white-painted stamped steel wheels with Super Traxion tires.
