The 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB ‘Vetroresina’ by Scaglietti from RM Sotheby’s (guide price $200k-$275k) is more than just a car—it’s a masterpiece of automotive history and design, capturing the spirit of Ferrari’s innovation and racing pedigree. Fully restored to its original factory livery of Oro Chiaro over Tan, this exceptional vehicle recently scored an impressive 99.5 points out of 100 at the 2018 Ferrari Club of America National Meet, earning it the coveted Platinum Award and the Coppa Bella Macchina. It also received the accolade of best “3-Series” Ferrari at the show, underscoring its impeccable condition and desirability.
Introduced in 1975, the 308 GTB was the first Ferrari road car to feature a fibreglass body—referred to as Vetroresina in Italian. This groundbreaking design by Pininfarina, built by Scaglietti, resulted in a lightweight, aerodynamic vehicle that weighs in at a mere 2,315 pounds. Its balance and responsiveness have made it a favourite among Ferrari enthusiasts. Only 712 of these fibreglass 308s were built, making them a rare and sought-after model.
Chassis number 20695 was constructed to European specifications and originally delivered to Bernard Kummer of Hadamar, Germany, on February 14, 1977. The car was finished in the stunning Oro Chiaro over a Tan leather interior and was notably delivered without a stereo or factory air conditioning, emphasizing its pure driving focus. It later found its way to California in the 1980s, where it became a prized possession of several notable Ferrari aficionados, including renowned restorer Patrick Ottis of Berkeley, California.
The journey of this particular 308 GTB continued to Canada in 2009, where it underwent a meticulous, factory-correct restoration by Rocks Automotive Restoration in Toronto. Known for their expertise with Ferrari 308s, Rocks Automotive dedicated approximately 1,200 hours to ensure every detail was perfect. The result is a car that appears just as it did when it first left the factory.
Following its restoration, the 308 GTB was showcased at the Ferrari Club of America Annual Meet in Watkins Glen, New York, where its exceptional quality was recognized with top honours. Having been driven less than 1,000 kilometres since its restoration, this Ferrari remains in outstanding condition. It comes complete with its original service book, a set of manuals in the correct pouch, a tool kit, a jack, and a comprehensive history file, including receipts and photos from its restoration.
This 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB ‘Vetroresina’ is not just a car but a piece of Ferrari’s storied history, meticulously restored and ready for a passionate new owner. Its unique livery, rarity, and Concours-winning pedigree ensure it will stand out in any collection and bring immense joy to its next custodian.
