The 1980s was somewhat of a golden decade for the motoring industry and Ferrari in particular excelled in this time period. If you love the Italian luxury car brand’s vehicles from this time, you’ll definitely want to sit up and take notice of this 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi that is going under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s Fort Lauderdale auction this month. It is believed to be one of just 144 examples from the last year of production of this vehicle so you’ll be in mighty exclusive company if you’re the one that is lucky enough to get behind the wheel when the hammer goes down on this lot.
The 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi from RM Sotheby’s indicates fewer than 11,600 km (~7,208 mi.) at time of cataloguing and it is presented in remarkably good condition so might just become the crowning glory of any collector’s lineup of luxury, high end vehicles. It has been finished in the archetypical colour combination of Rosso Corsa over a retro-tastic beige leather interior and is positively overflowing with old school cool vibes that we’re loving here at Coolector HQ. It is powered by a 335 hp, 4.9-litre flat-12 engine; five-speed manual transmission and it has undergone a complete restoration carried out in 2015.
VINTAGE VIBES
There is an undeniable 80s style aesthetic to this phenomenal looking machine and if you’re after a car that screams Wall Street trader it has to be this 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi. The driver-orientated interior is perhaps the ideal distillation of supercar design; high-visibility Veglia Borletti instrumentation—each pod slightly canted towards the driver—give notice of all important data with their neon orange simplicity. A small-diameter Momo steering wheel gives a sense of surety and road feel, while Ferrari’s classic gated manual transmission delivers all the pleasing, mechanical sensation of carrying out seamless gear changes as the mighty flat-12 screams toward redline, just inches behind the cabin.
This truly stunning 1984 512 BBi offered here from RM Sotheby’s is finished in the highly attractive all–Rosso Corsa over the vintage looking beige leather. It was originally delivered from Maranello to the Nanterre offices of legendary French Ferrari distributor Charles Pozzi SA, and sold new on 17 July 1984 to James “Jimmy” Dodson, a successful petroleum wholesaler from Fayette, Alabama. Dodson retained this BBi for at least 15 years and it is now presented in an exemplary condition to whomever is lucky enough to be the winning bidder on this lot.
As presented today, this breathtaking 512 BBi keeps the majority of its factory-correct finishes throughout, which includes its Rosso Corsa paintwork, tan Daytona-pattern upholstery, Pioneer audio system with equaliser, French-market Cibie foglamps, Vitaloni mirrors, and rear aileron spoiler. The car’s correct centre-mount wheels and Michelin TRX tires are yet another authentic complement to its low stated mileage and ensure that this looks as good as the day it rolled off the assembly line.
