If we’re being honest, we can’t remember the last time we saw a car quite as mesmerising as this Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy from Schaltkulisse here at Coolector HQ. With a whole host of special-order options which includes the understated Elephant Ivory paintwork, cream vinyl and red tartan interior, factory high-performance straight-six engine and lightweight aluminium body, this prizewinning Mercedes-Benz 300SL isn’t just rare – it really is one of a kind (hence why the price is upon application).

This spectacular Mercedes-Benz was treated to an unparalleled restoration, which was carried out by specialist Lloyd Marx in Hamilton, New Zealand. Not a single stone was left unturned in the exhaustive four-year process – especially with regards to the precious aluminium body, which was painstakingly hammered and filed to a silky-smooth paint-like finish that really does look like it has just rolled off the production line for the first time.

When the restoration was complete, this amazingly resplendent ‘Gullwing’ was entered in New Zealand’s Ellerslie Intermarque Concours d’Elegance in 2015, and, unsurprisingly, won the prestigious Masters Class and scoring the third-highest recorded points in the competition’s 42-year history. Before the year was out, chassis #6500015 returned to London. Aware of the car’s significance as one of the 29 alloy-bodied 300SLs, the new owner charged the ‘Gullwing’ gurus at HK Engineering with elevating the car’s condition still further.

Exceptional Condition

A further 1,000 hours were spent enhancing this Mercedes, correcting minor imperfections and returning everything to absolutely original condition. This included the Nappa leather in the cabin which was reupholstered in New Zealand and returned to period correct vinyl and the driver-side wing mirror was removed. The work was finished in time for the car to be entered in the most famous automotive beauty pageant of them all, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. In the fiercely contested Post-War Touring class, it won second place.

The 300SL is not an especially rare classic car – in fact, Mercedes sold 1,400 of the be-winged beauties – but, like the examples just listed, there are those that, without question, stand head and shoulders above the competition and this one from Schaltkulisse is definitely one such example. And it’s these that are of most interest to today’s increasingly discerning classic car enthusiasts.
