In the picturesque landscape of Big Sur, a redwood-clad house originally designed by the esteemed local architect Mickey Muennig has undergone a stunning transformation. This renovation, spearheaded by Electric Bowery co-founder Cayley Lambur and director of interiors Stephanie Luk, preserves the iconic features of the original design while introducing custom furniture and modern updates.
Perched high on a bluff overlooking the dramatic coastline, the house was initially commissioned in 1993 and stands as a testament to Muennig’s architectural prowess. The building’s curved copper roof and redwood exterior cladding remain integral to its character, serving as the foundation for the remodel. Inspired by conversations with the original owner and delving into Muennig’s legacy, Lambur approached the project with a deep respect for the property’s history.
The house benefits from large windows and expansive glazing, capturing breathtaking views of the landscape and ocean. The renovation focused on reconfiguring internal spaces to enhance these vistas while updating outdated decor and fixtures.
A completely new custom kitchen was designed within the existing tight space to maximize the counter area and celebrate the garden and ocean views. The redwood millwork, created in collaboration with American furniture company Henrybuilt, blends seamlessly with the rest of the interiors. The contemporary look is further accentuated by raw steel, warm-stained concrete floors, and leathered natural quartzite.
In the living room, where the roof slopes to its lowest point, custom pieces like a curved channel-tufted sofa hug views into the canyon providing a cosy yet elegant ambience. An oversized claro walnut coffee table by Dusk anchors the space, while a stone hearth is flanked by vintage black-leather armchairs and a variety of textured rugs and pillows, adding layers of comfort and style.
The redwood panelling continues into the bedrooms and bathrooms, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the home. Custom beds dressed in deep red and green textiles bring warmth and colour to the bedrooms. One bathroom features thin, straight-stacked teal glazed tiles, creating a serene and sophisticated space, while another boasts a shower lined with square tiles in various shades of blue, evoking the nearby ocean.
As part of the renovation, a trailer on the property was restored and renovated to serve as additional guest accommodation and an office for remote work. This thoughtful addition ensures that the house is not only a beautiful retreat but also a functional space for modern living.
The Big Sur House renovation by Electric Bowery is a masterful blend of historical reverence and contemporary design. By preserving the iconic features of Mickey Muennig’s original architecture and introducing custom elements that enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal, Lambur and Luk have created a home that is both timeless and modern. This project stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Big Sur and the innovative spirit of Electric Bowery.
