Commonwealth Classics 1988 Land Rover, Range Rover Classic

When it comes to automotive icons, few stand as tall as the Land Rover / Range Rover Classic. Commonwealth Classics has taken this legendary 1988 model to new heights, delivering a beautifully restored and customized version of the RRC that blends timeless design with modern performance. This particular Range Rover, with its British and Italian roots, has been meticulously revitalized and is ready to conquer both the streets and the trails.

Originally outfitted with a 2.5L VM Motori diesel engine from Italy, the decision was made to replace it with a more robust and performance-focused UK-built Rover 200Tdi turbo diesel engine. First launched in 1991, the 200Tdi has become a favourite for its power, reliability, and off-road prowess. Commonwealth Classics upgraded the drivetrain with a variable geometry turbo and larger intercooler, optimizing performance and ensuring this Range Rover can keep pace on modern highways—cruising comfortably at 70-75+ mph while delivering responsive acceleration around town.

Externally, this Range Rover Classic received a refined backdating treatment. Restored in a stunning Porsche ‘Chalk’ grey, the design nods to Land Rover’s earlier models with Suffix-type grilles and badging. The factory steel bumpers were replaced with custom units, while a swing-away carrier was added to accommodate the oversized spare tyre. Rolling on colour-matched Wolf steel wheels wrapped in Michelin Defender LTX tyres, this RRC is equipped to handle whatever terrain is thrown its way, with a suspension enhanced by HD springs and Old Man Emu shocks.

Inside, the craftsmanship shines even brighter. The original tan and brown interior has been reimagined with distressed denim and black leather, creating a rugged yet refined cabin. The factory seats have been reupholstered with contrasting stitching that mirrors the original design, and the theme continues to the hand-stitched door cards, centre console, and cubby box. Luxurious German square weave carpeting lines the floor, while the matte black headliner adds a touch of understated elegance. A dog cage in the rear and a custom air compressor box make this a functional vehicle for adventurers with four-legged companions.

For added modern convenience, Commonwealth Classics upgraded the RRC with a Blaupunkt stereo head unit, complete with Bluetooth, USB, and AUX capabilities. The lighting also received a boost, featuring a warm, halogen-like LED kit that improves nighttime visibility without disrupting the classic aesthetic.

This 1988 Range Rover Classic strikes the perfect balance between old-school charm and modern-day capability. Whether navigating city streets or rugged backroads, it’s ready to turn heads and take on any adventure that comes its way.
