Although it is currently just a concept, this TD-MP1 Moped from Doehmers will likely be put into small batch production if there is enough interest generated around it and, we for one, definitely hope that is the case because, to be honest, it’s probably one of the coolest looking steeds we’ve seen in a while at Coolector HQ. This majestic looking machine from Doehmers is a modular lightweight electric “moped” with a design that delivers smart modularity and ease of use with one purpose. Pure transport with nothing else other than low aero racing style ergonomics to cut fast through the wind in total silence.
The Doehmers TD-MP1 Moped is one of the most futuristic looking concept bikes we’ve encountered and the quality of the visuals are what truly set it apart from the competition and have us hoping it goes into full blown production and is whizzing around urban landscapes sooner rather than later. It is clearly not made for optimal practicality, rather as a piece of rideable art – yet with objectives to increase diversity and popularise the use of small electric vehicles other than electric bicycles and scooters, promoting lightweight, fun mobility with a sense of freedom, as opposed to fossil fuelled heavy vehicles such as the car, it’s a real winner in our book.
STRIKING DESIGN AESTHETIC
The frame of the Doehmers TD-MP1 Moped is designed with simplicity in mind around a long term fascination with construction concepts often used in industry for electric apparatus as well as in the beginnings of synthesiser manufacturing: two structural side walls with various components and interface stacked in-between. This principle was popular also in mid-century modernist architecture, built around two structural walls, filled with glass and functionality and delivers a visual impact quite like any other machine currently on the market.
The TD-MP1 Moped from Doehmers strives to take back the fun of lightweight two-wheeled low-powered transport – which is essentially what mopeds used to be. As such it is also a contemporary answer to the iconic Honda SS50 that has been a favourite to customise and race throughout the decades amongst motor heads and gives a familiar yet brand new look and feel to this infinitely eye-catching steed. The modular design allows for custom functions like iPhone or any smart phone parking place, a glove box amongst others. The iPhone becomes the main interface to the vehicle and gives it a pleasing technological edge in our opinion.
TD-MP1 is the first prototype of a research project that aims to explore and investigate the above mentioned principles, aesthetics and manufacturing methods put into a lightweight two wheeled machine in addition to research in electric motor control systems and drivetrains. All we know here at The Coolector is that it is, without question, one of the coolest looking electric bikes we’ve ever seen and though it isn’t currently available to purchase, here’s hoping it will be soon.
