Comfort is something that is important to us here at Coolector HQ and it’s often difficult to find furniture that delivers this alongside a stylish aesthetic. Well, we’ve found something that provides both these features in spades with the Instrmnt Applied Design Lounge Chair which boasts awesome mid-century vibes along with a contemporary comfort beyond compare.
As you would expect from such a well-crafted piece of furniture, the Lounge Chair from Instrmnt Applied Design doesn’t come cheap but you get what you pay for when it comes to quality. This first class piece of designer furniture will set you back £1395 and comes in a number of different materials and fabrics so you can find the one that best fits with your own interior design aesthetic.
Quality Craftsmanship
This superb looking Lounge Chair from Instrmnt Applied Design has been built in collaboration with Glasgow-based furniture maker Lewis Macleod and makes use of the expertise of four other local craftsman and creatives in the process. They are made to order in extremely limited numbers and it can be specified in either American Walnut or Scottish Oak. Three divergent textiles options are also available; namely, grey Melton wool, tan calf leather, or forest green Italian bouclé.
The Lounge Chair from Instrmnt Applied Design (£1395) has many excellent features but one of the most notable is the subtle, small removable plinth which extends on a stainless steel arm, bolted to the left hand side of each chair. Its bevelled hardwood top is big enough for a coffee cup or book and neatly adds an extra level of functionality and versatility – something which is evident with much of Instrmnt Applied Design’s work.
Sandblasted stainless steel is used for the arms and upholstery frame, securing the Pirelli rubber webbing which holds each cushion in place. Localising manufacturing and assembly has been a crucial undertaking for the studio in recent years – with their wares crafted entirely in the UK. The Lounge Chair takes that a step further with the bespoke carpentry, upholstery and stainless steel fabrication taking place within a few miles of their shop and studio in Saltmarket – which is an area of Glasgow synonymous with the city’s industrial past.
Top Notch Studio
Instrmnt Applied Design (I–AD) is a Glasgow-based, multi-disciplinary design studio founded by product designer Pete Sunderland and graphic designer Ross Baynham. Their focus lies in crafting industrial style goods with an emphasis on quality, simplicity and attainability – something that really shines through with the minimalist and visually superior Lounge Chair.
Though the £1395 price tag might be a touch prohibitive for the average furniture purchase, if you’re after a stand out, focal piece of furniture for your home, this one from Instrmnt Applied Design will be tough to beat. Unparalleled craftsmanship and exemplary aesthetics combine to make this one of our favourite pieces of designer furniture here at Coolector HQ.
