LOVE HULTÉN Evoboxx

Vintage designed inspired by the 1980s and old school video games is very much in our design sweet spot here at Coolector HQ and that’s why we’re forever falling for the brilliant releases of Swedish industrial designer, LOVE HULTÉN, and the first class collection of retro style devices he is responsible for. The latest to have been announced is the excellent looking Evoboxx which is a synthesizer based on the cellular automaton Game of Life, created by mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970.

LOVE HULTÉN is forever looking to the past to inform his designs and so it has proven once again with this Game of Life inspired, Evoboxx, which will appeal to the mathematician and retro lovers alike. This eye-catching piece of design from LOVE HULTÉN has got the same distinct aesthetic which the designer is synonymous with and is very much in keeping with his desire to make genuinely interesting and engaging pieces of tech.

70s Inspired Design

Inspired by the Game of Life by John Conway, which is a zero-player game, meaning that its evolution is determined by its initial state, requiring no further input. One interacts with the Game of Life by creating an initial configuration and observing how it evolves, or, for advanced players, by creating patterns with particular properties and this is the principle which LOVE HULTÉN used when creating this super cool looking Evoboxx design.

The Evoboxx from LOVE HULTÉN boasts a folding hardwood body which is host to a battery powered Raspberry Pi 3+, a mono speaker, an 8″ LCD and a 50mm quartz crystal sphere for navigation. All these old-school design features coupled with the modern tech within combine together to make the Evoboxx look and operate like something directly from the 1970s and 80s and it’s clear that this is what LOVE HULTÉN was striving for with his original design.

The Game of Life made its first public appearance in the October 1970 issue of Scientific American, in Martin Gardner’s “Mathematical Games” column. Theoretically, Conway’s Life has the power of a universal Turing machine: anything that can be computed algorithmically can be computed within Life. Gardner wrote, “Because of Life’s analogies with the rise, fall and alterations of a society of living organisms, it belongs to a growing class of what are called ‘simulation games’ (games that resemble real life processes) and it is this interesting notion which is the driving force behind the Evoboxx from LOVE HULTÉN.

Old School Cool

Whilst, to be honest, we can’t see ourselves being overly entertained by the process of creating our own Game of Life here at Coolector HQ, we’re forever beguiled by the design talents of LOVE HULTÉN so it was impossible to ignore something as good looking as this Evoboxx creation. Certainly not as entertaining as some of his video game creations, this offering is no less impressive from a design and build point of view and will certainly appeal to a certain demographic.

Delicious design details abound with the Evoboxx from LOVE HULTÉN and it is clearly a labour of love on his part to bring this superb piece of vintage design to life. It has a mighty interesting back story and inspiration and though it’s not likely to hold the interest of many for too long, it is another fantastically cool addition to the ever growing list of designs from this talented industrial designer from Sweden.
