Orient Street House

Located in the heart of South Fremantle, Western Australia, the Orient Street House is a stunning example of modern architecture that seamlessly blends with the region’s rich history. This remarkable abode, designed by Philip Stejskal Architecture, is a testament to innovative design and clever restoration.

Conceived around the remnants of an 1896 cottage, the Orient Street House boasts a unique spatial logic that reimagines the original structure. The restored limestone rubble walls have been reinhabited, and the existing timber roof structure and verandah have been reinterpreted in the form of an expressed timber structure that hovers over the archaeological remains. This clever design provides accommodation for additional programs at the first-floor level, creating a sense of continuity and harmony between old and new.

The material palette is characterized by masonry, natural timbers sometimes stained, metal, and glass, which adds to the house’s sleek and modern aesthetic. The 250m2 property, situated on a 474m2 site, features two building levels and was completed in 2019 after a meticulous design and construction process.

One of the standout features of the Orient Street House is its ability to pay homage to the past while embracing the present. The architects have successfully managed to retain the essence of the original cottage, incorporating it into a modern and functional living space. This blend of old and new is a true masterpiece, making the Orient Street House a must-visit destination for architecture enthusiasts and design lovers alike.
