Growing up in the 80s and 90s, the GameBoy was one of our first forays into the world of videogames and we’ll always have a soft spot for it here at Coolector HQ. With that in mind, we’ve had our heads turned by this Playdate Handheld Console which is a new, tiny game system with a bunch of new games which will be perfect for keeping you entertained whilst travelling.
The Playdate Handheld Console will see pre-orders beginning in July and it is familiar, but unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It has a very special black and white screen – it’s not backlit, but, rather, a super reflective screen – that looks way more striking and impressive than you’re likely to believe for such a small device.
Surprising Performance
At first glance, you might not expect too much from the Playdate Handheld Console but it actually boasts a peppy little processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a surprisingly loud loudspeaker. And when you’re not playing games on it, the screen doesn’t turn off – it actually becomes a very nice low-power clock that you can keep by your bedside.
The Playdate Handheld Console has a pre-order price tag of $179 and you’ll get a lot of bang for your gaming buck. Designed in collaboration with Teenage Engineering, the Playdate looks awesome. It’s colourful, it effortlessly fits in your pocket. And they have worked together to make sure buttons feel pleasingly tactile and clicky and that the crank action is silky smooth.
Here’s the truly unique bit. Playdate isn’t just an empty system when you purchase one. Once you set up your Playdate, you’ll start to receive two brand new games for your gaming pleasure… every week. For 12 weeks. That’s 24 free games, in an array of different categories. Some are short. Some are long. Will you love them all? Most likely not. Will you have a great time trying them? Definitely. Want a Playdate this summer? Pre-orders start next month.
