The fantastically striking Vollebak Garbage Watch certainly doesn’t look like your average timepiece and is all the more interesting and alluring as a result. As clothes and technology merge over the next few decades, and everything from exoskeletons to integrated monitoring and intelligence will require power distribution, there are three fundamental challenges Vollebak are working on and these are represented in the design of this uber-cool watch.
Waste Not, Want Not
Vollebak are exploring what conductive base materials clothes can be made from. So you can think of the copper in their Full Metal Jacket and graphene in their Graphene Jacket as a platform on top of which other innovation can be added – a bit like an operating system in a computer. Secondly, you have to look at what type of intelligence they’re endeavouring to layer into their brilliant clothing and finally, if clothes are going to become tech, then how will they get treated at the end of their life? These are all questions that infused the creation of this timepiece.
The Vollebak Garbarge Watch stems from the fact that most of the 50 million tonnes of electronic waste that’s created every year is treated like garbage even though it isn’t. Instead it contains many of the world’s most precious metals, such as silver, platinum, copper, nickel, cobalt, aluminium and zinc. You’ll find 7% of the world’s gold in e-waste. So, in other words, millions of tonnes of the stuff people normally pay to dig up out of the ground is heading straight back into it.
To actively try and avoid trashing our own planet, we all need to start figuring out how to re-use the stuff we already have. So the Vollebak Garbage Watch began with a very simple premise. What if electronic waste isn’t garbage? What if it’s simply pre-assembled raw materials that people can use to make new things. It’s why everything you can see on the Garbage Watch was once something else entirely – a motherboard from your computer, a microchip in your smartphone, or wiring from your TV.
Collaborative Effort
Working in collaboration with the Wallpaper* Re-Made project, the Garbage Watch from the fellas at Vollebak reframes an often invisible and hazardous end of the supply chain. Over the next year Vollebak are going to be going on a journey from prototype to product, sourcing components from sustainable e-waste recycling efforts to create these brilliant looking Garbage Watches.
If you want a reminder to do better in terms of wastage, we can think of few better examples than this top notch Vollebak Garbage Watch. You can get your name on the waiting list for one now and deliveries for these will start some time next year. We’ll certainly be throwing our hat into the ring here at Coolector HQ.
